CARING FOR YOUR PERSIAN

Persian cats require regular grooming, however a kitten will only need grooming three times a week for a few minutes, be gentle but at the same time let the kitten know who is the boss this will make it much easier in future and the kitten becomes accustomed to being groomed.

I use a mason pearson nylon and pure bristle brush, a fine-and wide-toothed metal comb, nail clippers and johnsons baby powder.

Start by laying the cat on its back, sprinkle a little baby powder onto the cat and brush the underside, the tummy and insides of the legs and then follow up with the comb making sure you have not missed any knots, at this point while the cat or kitten is laid on your lap, with cat nail clippers just take off the end of the.nail. Turn the cat over and do the same on the sides and up the cats back towards the head. Pay particular attention to behind the cats ears as this area is prone to knotting. Brush the tail the opposite way to which the fur grows from the tip down towards the body, then follow through with the comb. By following these few simple steps hopefully you will avoid getting a badly knotted coat. When you have finished brushing your cat wipe the eyes with some damp cotton wool, check the inside of the cats ears and gently wipe any wax away with cotton wool.

It may at some point be necessary for you to bath your cat, I find if this is done from an early age most cats accept it and quite enjoy it. Put the cat or kitten in the sink/bath hold the cat with one hand and thoroughly wet the coat then apply johnsons baby shampoo or a cat shampoo, never use your own, then shampoo gently but thoroughly and avoid the cats eyes and ears, rinse the shampoo out and wrap the cat in a towel. The best way to dry the cat is with a hair dryer, being careful not to hold the drier too close and not to have it it on too high a setting .

Cats require booster inoculations once a year.

Worming- cats should be wormed on a regular basis, your vet will reccomend a regular worming programme if the breeder has not already done so. Worming products are available in injection form, tablets and liquid. Use the method your vet suggests or the one that suits you best.

Fleas -Most cats at some point in their lives will suffer from these and there are several ways to eradicate this with sprays, powder, drops you put on the back of the neck, frontline and program which I use, available from your veterinary surgeon.

Neutering/Spaying- all pet kittens should be neutered/spayed and you will have a happier and healthier cat.
